Curating Human Remains
As a conservator working with human remains I am very concerned with respect, care and access.
How are the remains stored? How are they treated? Are they accessible? From these questions I improve and adapt the care in a Museum context to facilitate research, teaching, handling and use.
Accessibility is the key, if collections are not accessible, why do we store and keep them? Secondly, another key word for me is respect. Working with human remains have always made me feel privileged and honored.
Pia was formerly the conservator at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and she is now Archaeological Conservator at the Kulturhistorisk Museum in Oslo. Pia wrote a very insightful blog on the curatorship and conservation of human remains at the Petrie Museum, which you can read here: https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/museums/2016/07/12/dead-to-me/#more-47511
